Utility of United Nations, is it success of failure? Pakistani University Students thoughts.
Here are the following lines you can read the views of Pakistani University students about the United Nations. What they think of UN? Is it a failure or a success? You can read their views with logics and reasons about United Nations.
First Response
UN (united Nations) is the international organization founded in 1945. It’s currently made up of 193 member states. Before united Nations, there was a league of nations which has the same objective as that of UN. The UN was established after the world war II with the aim of preventing future wars. Actually, the organization mission is to preserve the world peace.
According to my point of view, the UN is very successful…..
1) it was established after world war II with aim that no further war will be taken place and still no world war III came.
2) It aims to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations.
3) it is success because its efforts led to the eradication of smallpox, AIDS epidemic, HIV epidemic and many more.
4) according to my views, it’s successful because it’s sustains the modern systems of international law, law of sea, space law etc.
5) and it’s success are impressive if i say that it’s also has main political action body “the security council”.
So, the UN is a success…..
Second Response
The United Nations has failed in peacekeeping of world and to avoid the wars between states. The main objectives of this international organization was maintenance of peace and prevention of wars but the influential states use this organization for there own purposes. The main loophole is in this is power of veto which is used by these powerful states for there own benefits not for the purpose for which it ought to be used. Some of dispute which shows ineffectiveness of UN
- Israeli occupation of Palestine. In this occupation millions of people killed and displaced. Israel illegal occupied the historic land of Palestine about 85%.
- Kashmir dispute between Pakistan and India.73 years has been passed but this dispute is not resolved. The UN has said of plebiscite to resolve but all in vain. The serious human rights violation is happening in kashmir but UN has become deaf ear.
- Iraq invasion by US. Millions of Iraqi has deid in this conflict and leave Iraq in civil and economic instability.
- Rohingya crises, in which military crackdown on minority muslim, in which thousands of people were dead and thousands flee to Bangladesh.
These are some failure of UN but there are lot more.If UN wanted to maintain the peace and prevention of war in future than this organization not show biasness but make efforts to control dispute with way they have to be controlled with impartialness.
Third Response
Because it was instituted to prevent another world war, and especially to prevent a nuclear war, it did its job. Even if he didn’t do anything else, it was a success.
The problem with the UN is that it can prevent powerful countries from going to war with each other, but it damages peacekeeping for marginalized countries.
The UN is a completely useless organization. It was formed in the wake of World War II to maintain peace among all nations. However, today it has become an organization without turns and without voice.
The United Nations has become one of the most ineffective organizations. Even 73 years after its existence, the United Nations has not ended the world’s most serious concerns. Let’s look at some of the problems that the United Nations has overlooked.
Genocide in Rwanda:
In 1994, the UN; and I quote “I just got up and saw” the massacre of 800,000 ethnic Tutsis, caused by the Hutu government.
Invasion of Iraq:
Although the United Nations declared it illegal, the United States simply attacked Iraq and remained there for seven long years, calling it a war for democracy. What use is the UN when someone can go to war?
Israel / Palestine problem:
In 1948, the UN undertook to divide the land west of the Dead Sea into two states, namely Israel and Palestine. This is what they found.
What a ridiculous plan! Do you think such nations could coexist, when parts of them spread over hostile territory?
Kashmir problem:
In 1947, a war broke out between India and Pakistan against the princely state of Kashmir. The UN has drawn a control line. However, they did not finish the job. To date, a small patch, also called the Siachen Glacier, has not been claimed.
The efficiency of the United Nations is worse than even the worst courts in the world. 73 years later, many problems remain unsolved.
Perhaps the main reason why the UN is so ineffective is the way it works. For a decision to be taken in the Security Council, the “yes” of the five permanent members is needed: the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China and France.
These 5 members have veto rights, so they can prohibit any decision. A single amendment requires months, if not years, to appease the five nations of the veto. Worse yet, the five nations take diametrically opposite positions on such serious issues.
The UN also recommends that countries take a special position, even if they do not want to. For example, UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) forces countries to accept refugees. It is very easy to give such advice, especially when it is not you who pays.
The UN had at least some effectiveness until the 1990s. In fact, the two superpowers, the United States and the USSR, maintained a delicate balance in the General Assembly. After the fragmentation of the USSR, there is only one superpower, which has further reduced the effectiveness of the United Nations. The United Nations is now heavily biased toward countries with sour relations with the United States.
Therefore, the UN is essentially useless. It is partial and ineffective. Does not fulfill the function for which it was designed.
Fourth Response
UN was formed in 1945 after world war to cope up with hard ships and disasters caused because by world war 2 .The United Nations was actually formed for a positive and beneficial change all around the globe , to help in overcoming the miseries and hardships in the world , to improve the living of suffering humanity,to prosper poors and developing states .In short its basic goal was bringing peace and prosperity by resolving the matters and disputes between the states . It was formed by the mutual consent of the major states. It was to provide equal rights to all humanity. Its aim was to stop violence and preserve the rights,to implement international law around the globe but from the very start it was seen deficient in performing its duties and to implement its decision in suffering areas . Its been seen at many occasions that united nation was found helpless in implementing its decisions. There are hundred of examples in front of us from where we can easily extract the failure of United Nations. If we speak about the equality of human rights then why black people are being brutally murdered in western countries , why they are kept deprived of there own rights . Why they are being discriminated in every race of life .why there is discrimination because of religion and race .There are vast discussions on role of United Nations but general opinion is that it didn’t succeeded in its purpose . The failure of United nations can be seen in playing its role in dispute between kashmiri people and Indian government. Though this matter has been discussed several times before unites nations. The humiliation caused to people of burma , Palestine and Indian Muslims are all supporting events of failure of United Nations. United Nations sent its troops in many countries like Bosnia for the betterment of people but full implementation was never seen . Still many states depends on United Nations for their disputes and matters between them and they expect those problems to be mutually resolved by UN . UN must work for the people not for the powers
Fifth Response
When any institution is made then preamble and purpose behind its formation is most important. as far as United nation is concerned it was established after world war 2 in 1945 to handle peace and to hinder in the way of war. Today after about 75 years no such war occur , to some extent it has saved the world till now from war. So, we can say one of the purpose of UN is achieved. But as far as to protect rights of developing countries, racism, maintaining law and order is concerned it has badly failed. It stand as a political character instead of taking actions against countries. Powerful countries like USA ,UK and many other countries have done much destruction mocking at the building stone of UN. USA attacked many countries like Afghanistan , Iraq and Iran UN did nothing with against America. Even in South Asia India is violating International norms and resolutions but UN is spectating and cheering at the miserable situation and grave human rights violations. No any particular action was taken against India. So in presence of UN states are violating statutes, norms and rights but at the same time it has control world war like destruction which is most higher destruction than any. In my UN remain successful from saving the world form major destruction. But UN should also shows his competency in protection of rights , equality of states, grave human rights violation. because this could lead the world to world war 3. For example if UN did not take notice of india for what she is doing in Kashmir then Pakistan will definitely interfere India for protection of Kashmiri people. both India and Pakistan are nuclear armed states which could lead the world toward a massive destruction . So for UN to be successful it should also take notice of rights of people.
In conclusion i would say UN remains successful till now from saving the world from massive destruction but at the same it also badly failed in protecting rights of rights of states and equity among states.
Sixth Response
The united nations has failed to prevent war and fulfill peacekeeping duties many times throughout its history.
Millions of people around the world have been killed and displaced since the UN was founded in 1945.since the second half of the 20th century there have been counties wars some of them still ongoing all under the watch of United Nations. however the UN has failed several times across the world mostly because of the right to veto at the disposal of five countries. here are some of most damning indictment of the UN ineffectiveness.
1 Israeli occupation (1948-Now)
2 Kashmir dispute (1948-Now)
3 Combodia Violence (1975-Now)
4 Somali civil War (1991-Now)
5 Rwandan Civil War (1994)
6 Srebrenica Massacre (1995)
7 darfur conflict in Sudan(2003-Now)
8 Iraq invasion (2003-2011)
9 syrian civil War (2011-Now)
10 south sudan (2013-Now)
11 yeman civil war (2014-Now)
Today the world is witnessing a shocking roll back of human rights across the globe.powerful leaders are pushing hate denying people their rights ignoring serious crimes against humanity and promotiong inequality.
Now Here can it still be argued that the United Nations has not been a failure?
Seventh Response
The United Nations, which succeeded League of Nations seemed to be successful till now. But this success is not absolute. As the general apprehension implies that might is right, the influence of mighty cannot be minimized in the World Organizations like UN. The main aim of UN and its principle organs is to prevent the world from the situation of unrest and therefore ensuring peace. The history of events does not show a relative success and role of UN in suppressing the situation of political and military unrest, the reason lies within the structure of International law. The UN does not have any authority over the states, neither it has any coercive instrument to compel any state or its member to follow its resolution in spirit. UN is not a sovereign body, hence the question of sanction is not suitable, but its importance also cannot be minimized. One principle organ of UN is Security Council, which is basically the group of economically powerful nations and they tend to decide the fate of underdeveloped countries, which is very drastic. As we have seen, the economic sanctions on Iran does not result in the massive decline of polity, economy, and social indicators, but this event can depict that the UN is not neutral and its decisions are prejudicial to its masters. Moreover, UN is unable to resolve any issue since its creation, the General Assembly is the body where every state called on the podium and they use to repeat the same issues every year they are facing, and it will probably go no the next year and the next as well. It will remain that way until the mighty nations have influence on that bodies. Meanwhile, Security council consists of powerful nations, deciding the fate of others keeping their self interests on board. In that conditions, unfortunately, it is unable for any Organization to help flourish peace and tranquility around the world. Thus it is a facade, but the other indicators, child education and welfare, women empowerment, labor protection, free trade market and many others provide a suitable ground of its success. Besides several drastic drawbacks, the improvement of social status by UN in underdeveloped countries is admirable, thus in my opinion, UN is a success till now.

Ninth Respondant
United Nations is success because its mere existence prevented major international crises from escalating into global armed conflicts and facilitated for decades the ongoing interaction and mediation between political opponents.
There are no better first responder to humanitarian crises, either natural or man-made. It is the UN peacekeepers that keep belligerents from wreaking havoc without restraint, it is the UN agencies that sustain refugees and lead international efforts in reconstruction and rehabilitation in the aftermath of such crises.
It safeguards and sustains the modern system of international law including such its areas as space law , international trade law , law of the sea, etc. That provide the backbone for civilized interaction between nations, including the promotion of human rights.
United Nations led and continues to lead the efforts in protecting the environment and coping with the climate change and the UN conducts demining in the post-conflict areas getting rid of landmines that are scattered in 78 countries and kill around 15 thousand people annually.
Its efforts led to the eradication of smallpox, yaws, polio, and stemmed the HIV/AIDS epidemic, established the International Classification of Diseases and International Health Regulations. The list can be continued for many more pages in the areas of decolonization, atomic energy, human settlements, food security, protection of the children and so on and so forth. It is not difficult to find on the web all the necessary further details on the UN success and pitfalls in all these areas.
These success are even more impressive once you recall that its main political action body – the Security Council is designed to operate on consensus but is chronically handicapped by political chasms, that the resolutions of the General Assembly do not have mandatory power, that most of its 193 member states rarely pay their membership dues in full and on time, that UN does not have either standing military or police and that the idea of having the stand-by military and police contingents never came to being, that until very recently it was not resourced to have a modern global logistical network, that it has to operate in a very diverse multicultural environment relying mostly on persuasion rather than on the direct enforcement.
To conclude, the UN is not a magic wand and miracle cure. It is a very imperfect instrument, but the humanity has yet to come up with a better one.
Tenth Respondance
First of all,I will tell you about that the United nation is a result of anarchy that was created in World War Two.So, after seeing the conditions of the world, there was total disastrous environment and population was the host that was facing these problems. There were so many conferences held to improve the conditions and relations between the nations of the world. On 24 th october ,1945 United nation came into being . There were some main objects of the United Nations, which were
*Save the nations from the scourage of war.
*To reaffirm the Fundamental human rights and the dignity of the human person.
*To reaffirm the faith in the equal rights of man and woman in all nations large and small.
*To establish such conditions that should maintain the international law and international obligations.
*Promote social progress and better standards of life and larger freedom.
*To Unite the strength to maintain international peace and security.
*To ensure that the armed forces should not be used for the common interest.
*To use the international machinery for the promotion of economic and social advancement of all the people of the world.
Now these were some main and most important objects, which has to be followed by United Nations.
As you can see the current condition of the world that there is no complete implentation of fundamental human rights. Recently, you can see George Floyd case. The police guy dealt him as a lower nation, even he was american national. He kept saying,” I can’t breathe”.The police guy dealt him with cruelty because He was Black. But the object of United Nations don,t desrcibe this act.
United Nation never speaks for Muslim countries.
Phalestine,Burma, syriya, kashmir all these are muslim states and there is no single voice raised in the assembly of United Nations. Who does not know about the conditions of all these muslim states? Their streets got red with their blood. But United Nations intentionally not considering them. There is complete violation of all the objects that were set by United Nations itself. So, United Nations itself violating there own terms and conditions. They only take consideration on those countries from which they took advantages.
So,these are my views about United Nation, it is a one sided institution of powerful evil countries. Yes,United Nations is a complete Failure.
Eleventh Response
The United Nations has failed to prevent war and fulfill peacekeeping duties many times throughout its history. Millions of people around the world have been killed and displaced since the UN was founded in 1945. Since the second half of the 20th century, there have been countless wars, some of them still ongoing, all under the watch of the United Nations.
The United Nations (UN) was set up in 1945 as an international umbrella organisation with several objectives primarily including the prevention of war and maintaining peace in disputed areas.
However, the UN has failed several times across the world mostly because of the right to veto at the disposal of five countries. There are following failures of United Nations.
- Israeli occupation (1948-Now)
one of most failure of UN is Israeli occupation on Palestine. Ever since the creation of the Jewish state in 1948, Palestinians have been fighting against what a UN investigator once described as Israel’s ethnic cleansing.
At least 15,000 Palestinians were killed and some 750,000 out of a total population of 1.9 million were forced to take refuge far from their homelands between 1947 and 1949. More than 7,000 Palestinians and 1,100 Israelis have died in the conflict between 2000 and 2014.
2. Cambodia violence (1975-1979)
After the end of the US-Vietnam War and the Cambodian civil war in 1975, the Khmer Rouge regime took control of Cambodia turning it into a socialist country, by using the policy of ultra-Maoism.
The regime carried out genocide between 1975-1979, killing some two million people nearly 25 percent of the country
The Vietnamese intervention ended genocide by the Khmer Rouge regime. The United Nations recognized the Khmer Rouge regime, while ignoring concerns of human rights violations.
12th Response
