26th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2019 has been passed by National Assembly on 13 May 2019. It is interesting to note that the amendment bill was passed unanimously which is rare feat in this bitterly divided house. This amendment starts the new era in the history of Pakistan as far as the FATA (Federally Administrated Tribal Areas) are concerned because finally after 71 years these areas are formally included in the State of Pakistan by giving them right to send their representatives in the National and Provincial Assemblies.
After this amendment, now FATA can elect 24 members for the Provincial assembly of KPK and 12 members for National Assembly of Pakistan. It is important to note here that previously it was recommended that the FATA should be given 16 sears for the KPK Assembly but in the bill 24 sears were given to FATA which is according to population of the area and good development. The 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2019, which is also known as FATA amendment bill, is positive step towards equitable resources allocation, unified system of governance and representation of backward areas in the mainstream.
26th Constitutional Amendment Bill is also unique in a sense that it is the first ever amendment bill in National Assembly moved by the private member as previously all constitutional amendment bill were moved by the Government members. The bill is moved by “Mohsin Dawar” and passed by all members of government and opposition which is positive step and good gesture. If all parties can unite on this issue after forgetting their bitter rivalries then they can also unite on other important issues of country.
